In the presence of 20 students MoECC organizes introductory meeting for summer programme

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) yesterday held an introductory meeting for students joining the first Summer Environmental Club programme. The event will be held from June 30 to July 18, 2024, with the participation of 20 young school students.

In this context, Director of the Public Relations and Communications Department at MoECC Mohammed Ahmed Al Dhahi, addressed the details of the program in terms of its vision and objectives. And said that the programme aims at creating environmental awareness among young people, instill a culture of environmental sustainability, and introduce the Qatari environment, both marine and terrestrial, stressing that the program comes within the Ministry’s vision to raise environmental awareness among all segments of society, and to create a new generation that understands the importance of the environment.

Al Dhahi said that this group of young people who are joining the first edition will be the nucleus for creating a new generation of Qatari environmental pioneers, which will qualify them to play a major role in spreading environmental awareness among segments of local society. He said that the group comprising 20 students will undergo an integrated course lasting 15 days, with the aim of developing their environmental skills and knowledge, as the schedule and activities of the programme have been prepared with great care.

Al Dhahi said that the programme includes many environmental workshops and lectures that will be held at the MoECC building, presented by a group of Ministry experts who have extensive experience in environmental awareness programs. And that these lectures aim to introduce the components of the Qatari environment, including local plants and animals. Al Dhahi said that many outside trips will be organized to introduce plants eco-system and the goals of sustainable environmental development within the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change also explained that the program contributes to raising awareness of the importance of afforestation in confronting climate change and the ministry’s efforts in establishing the green belt in the country, as well as introducing local plants and their medicinal and aromatic benefits, which were used in folk medicine in the past, as well as introducing harmful plants that are unfit for human or animal use, which contributes to expanding the base of identification of them from members of society, to help avoid them when seen on the Qatari mainland.

The workshops also include a number of initiatives aimed at raising awareness of recycling operations and their role in achieving environmental sustainability, and the target group will be introduced to biodiversity in the Qatari environment, its role in preserving the environment and the food chain, and the country’s efforts to protect and enrich it, which is represented in the initiatives and programs launched by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to preserve and protect sea turtles and whale sharks and breeding houbara bustards.

The Ministry pointed out that the program will include organizing external visits to the Qur’anic Botanic Garden at Qatar Foundation, the National Museum of Qatar, laboratories of the MoECC, with the aim of introducing young people to the mechanisms and means of preserving the environment, as well as the research vessel Janan, in addition to introducing environmental and green sustainability by visiting Msheireb City.
