Cabinet approves draft decision to consider Umm Al Sheif area a nature reserve
The Cabinet approved the draft decision of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to consider the Umm Al Sheif area a nature reserve, with the aim of preserving the marine environment and its biodiversity, and to avoid damage to pearl oysters in this area as a result of human activities such as fishing and maritime navigation.
Umm Al Sheif area, located in the northern part of the country, is considered one of the most prominent pearl fishing sites in the region, and one of the most famous fishing grounds in Qatar’s economic waters. It is characterized by a rich marine environment due to the convergence of currents carrying nutrients, making it a habitat abundant with marine life such as fish, shellfish, and coral reefs.
The decision includes a number of measures aimed at protecting the area, the most prominent of which is the ban on fishing, to enhance ecological balance and support biodiversity in Qatari waters. This is particularly important as pearl oysters play a crucial role in improving seawater quality through the process of filtration.
Studies have revealed that the Umm Al Sheif area continues to maintain its good environmental condition compared to other sites that have been subjected to increasing environmental pressures. This decision contributes to protecting the natural pearl oyster stock in Qatari waters.
