The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change enhances eco-tourism at Ras Abrouq

The events at Ras Abrouq, in which the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change participates in collaboration with Visit Qatar, have seen a wide turnout of visitors who enjoyed an experience that combines adventure, relaxation, and cultural enrichment, while preserving the unique environmental balance of the reserve.

This event is part of the increasing attention that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is giving to support eco-tourism. The Ras Abrouq area is characterized by natural and heritage features that make it one of the prominent eco-tourism destinations in the country, reflecting Qatar’s vision of achieving a balance between tourism development and environmental preservation.

Ras Abrouq is one of the most notable sites for wildlife relocation projects, home to hundreds of deer and Oryx, showcasing the country’s efforts to promote sustainable development in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation.

The area is part of the Al Reem Reserve, which was added by the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere” program to the UNESCO network, as part of a list of 23 new global sites. Ras Abrouq, located in the Zekreet area of Dukhan, was also designated as a natural reserve under Law No. (7) of 2005.

Faisal Falah Al-Rumaihi, Head of the Ras Abrouq Unit, confirmed that the Ras Abrouq area is located on the outskirts of the Al Reem Reserve, which is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is distinguished by its unique terrain and stunning landscapes, making it an exceptional destination that combines the beauty of nature with the authenticity of Qatari heritage, offering visitors a unique experience for exploration and adventure.

He explained that the Ministry, through the Natural Reserves and Protection Sector, has been keen to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving the site by implementing a comprehensive plan that ensures the event is held according to environmental sustainability standards. This plan includes mechanisms to monitor tourist activities to ensure they do not impact on the reserve’s environment and its natural components. Coordination with relevant authorities was carried out to adhere to strict standards, including safe waste disposal, reducing noise, and preserving the living organisms within the reserve without interference.

Al-Rumaihi pointed out that the Ministry pays great attention to the Ras Abrouq area due to its significance as one of the most prominent natural reserves in the country. It is working on developing plans to maintain the environmental balance and enhance its role as a major eco-tourism destination by developing sustainable facilities that support the continuation of this type of tourism.

On his part, Ali Al-Marri, an employee in the Ras Abrouq Unit, confirmed that the Ministry, through the Natural Reserves and Protection Sector, conducted regular surveys during the event. Additionally, awareness teams were involved to ensure compliance with environmental requirements. He noted that the event also included environmentally friendly measures, such as reducing the carbon footprint, using renewable energy sources in some areas, and designating teams to continuously clean the area.

Al-Marri emphasized that the Ras Abrouq Reserve is home to rare species of wildlife and plants, making it one of the most prominent natural landmarks in the country and a primary destination for eco-tourism. He stressed the importance of visitors committing to protecting the environment during the event and throughout the year.

For his part, Ahmed Mohammed pointed out that Ras Abrouq represents a successful model of eco-tourism, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy experiences that combine entertainment, education, and learning about Qatari heritage, while maintaining the beauty of nature and the integrity of the ecosystem. He praised the idea of holding a recreational event within a nature reserve that boasts stunning landscapes and diverse terrains, allowing visitors to experience a unique desert adventure with modern touches.

Meanwhile, Nawaf Al-Yousef noted that the event attracted a wide turnout from families, with children enjoying a variety of activities such as camel riding and learning about traditional games. Parents also had the opportunity to introduce their children to Qatar’s environment and its natural components, especially the deer and Arabian Oryx featured in the event. He mentioned that adults found the event to be a chance to relax amidst the enchanting natural surroundings.

Al-Yousef commended the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for its efforts in supporting eco-tourism by facilitating the organization of events in nature reserves and wilderness areas. He considered that the Ministry was committed to providing the highest standards of sustainability and high-quality services without causing any harm to the reserve or the plants and animals that live there.
