Ministry of Environment and Climate Change holds a meeting to follow up on the implementation of the project updating the National Biodiversity Strategy

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is implementing a project to review and update the National Biodiversity Strategy within the framework of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, referred to as the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (early action).

In a step that reflects Qatar’s commitment to environmental preservation, promoting sustainability, and safeguarding biodiversity, the Ministry held an important meeting to follow up on the project’s implementation. This is part of a cooperation agreement aimed at supporting national efforts in addressing environmental challenges and fulfilling international commitments to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

The meeting witnessed the participation of a group of specialists and consultants from both inside and outside the Ministry. It focused on reviewing the components of the project, implementation mechanisms, and updating the National Biodiversity Strategy to align with the global goals adopted at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as ensuring its compatibility with the country’s third National Development Strategy. Detailed steps required to implement the action plan within the specified timeline were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of coordination with strategic partners from both the public and private sectors to ensure the success of the project.

Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim Al-Hamr, Director of the Wildlife Development Department, confirmed that the project is a key pillar in achieving sustainable development within the framework of Qatar’s National Vision 2030. He emphasized that biodiversity conservation is a fundamental element in protecting the environment. He also clarified that the project is being implemented under the direct supervision of the Ministry, in collaboration with the project manager at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The National Biodiversity Strategy aligns with the “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework,” a global agreement aimed at enhancing the protection of ecosystems and restoring biological balance worldwide. This framework was adopted during the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Through this project, Qatar seeks to align its national strategies with this international framework, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection and the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

With this step, the State of Qatar reaffirms its firm commitment to environmental sustainability, grounded in an ambitious national vision and effective international partnerships, to ensure the preservation of its natural resources for future generations.
