The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has detected a prohibited "multi-layered" fishing net on one of the fishing boats during the daily inspection conducted by the Marine Creek Unit at Al Khor Port. The Marine Creek Unit, under the Marine Environment Protection Administration, confiscated the illegal net and issued a violation report. The case was then referred to Al Khor Police Station for further processing and eventual transfer to the Environmental Prosecution, in accordance with the Maritime Fishing Law and its executive regulations. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has repeatedly warned against the use of these nets during fishing operations due to their significant impact on biodiversity in Qatari waters. The ministry has highlighted that multi-layered nets indiscriminately catch all types and sizes of fish, resulting in the depletion of fish populations and the loss of marine ecosystem diversity. The Marine Environment Protection Administration has intensified its surveillance campaigns in ports and Qatari territorial waters, particularly during fishing seasons. They are actively working to monitor and regulate all violations that harm marine resources and the environment. This contributes to protecting them from the misconduct of offenders. Upon detecting such violations, the administration refers them to the relevant authorities and takes action to rectify them. The administration also conducts awareness programs targeting fishermen, amateurs, and workers in professions related to the fishing sector. These programs aim to educate them about the Maritime Fishing Law and its executive regulations. Which contributes to reducing fishing violations and promoting the sustainability of fishery resources. The administration consistently warns against illegal fishing practices, which pose a threat to endangered species and harm the marine environment. They emphasize that anyone using unauthorized and prohibited fishing equipment and methods will be held legally accountable for their actions. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change appeals to the public to report environmental violations and any abandoned nets in the sea by contacting the unified call center at the toll-free number 184, which operates 24/7, throughout the week.
