The Marine Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has carried out an extensive inspection campaign yesterday Friday May 3, 2024, at Al Wakra Port to ensure that boats do not violate the laws and legislation that protect the country’s wildlife. It also ensured the use of safe fishing methods and equipment that preserve biodiversity and coral reefs. the expanded campaign came with the participation of the Coast Guard at the Ministry of Interior, the Fisheries Resources Department at the Ministry of Municipality, the Ministry of Transportation, and Qatar Tourism.  The campaign lasted from one o’clock in the afternoon until five o’clock in the evening, and all participating parties aimed to ensure security and safety conditions, and not to violate the boat and other vessel use permits. The Marine Life Protection Department clarified that the campaign included informing and educating fishermen and sea-goers about the state's decisions and laws aimed at protecting and preserving marine biodiversity, pointing out that the campaigns target the regulation of marine environmental violations, referring them to the relevant authorities, and working to remove the causes of these violations in coordination with the relevant entities. The Marine Life Protection Department mentioned that the campaign included inspecting the fishing nets used in fishing operations on boats, warning against the use of illegal nets that cause damage to biodiversity in Qatari waters. They pointed out that multi-layered nets catch all types and sizes of fish, which leads to the depletion of fish stocks and biological diversity in the marine environment. The management warned all sea-goers of the necessity to adhere to legal marine fishing practices and to avoid committing violations that lead to the loss of endangered species and harm to the marine environment. They emphasized that anyone using illegal and prohibited fishing equipment and methods would be subject to legal accountability.
