Ministry of Environment Holds GCC Coordination Meeting for INC-5

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organized a coordination meeting on November 13 and 14, which included members of the team of representatives from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The discussions focused on drafting a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including marine environment issues, which is scheduled to take place in the city of Busan, South Korea.

The meeting was organized in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It was chaired by Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs Abdulhadi Nasser Al Marri, who emphasized the importance of this meeting in supporting the ongoing cooperation among GCC countries. He highlighted the goal of the negotiations, which is to establish a legally binding instrument aimed at eliminating plastic pollution, in line with the national interests of the GCC states.

The attendees reviewed the negotiation text and conference documents. The meeting also included discussions on the unified stance of the GCC countries on various issues related to the topic.

This took place as part of the preparations for the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), which is focused on drafting a legally binding international instrument to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The session is scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea, at the end of November 2024.
