The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) on Monday marked the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which falls on September 16, under the theme ‘Advancing Climate Action.’ The event was attended by undersecretary Abdulaziz bin Ahmed al-Mahmoud, Ministry of Education and Higher Education undersecretary Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Nuaimi, University of Doha for Science and Technology’s (UDST) Chemical Engineering Technology Department head Dr Mohannad al-Jarrah. Khaled al-Kilali, representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), delivered a recorded video message. During the event, officials honoured the winners of the ‘Ozone Shield of the Blue Planet’ competition. During the celebration, school students who won the ‘Ozone Shield of the Blue Planet’ competition were honoured. The competition was organised by the MoECC in collaboration with UDST and UNEP. The competition aimed to raise awareness among students about their social responsibility to protect the ozone layer by engaging them in creating videos and publications that reflect their understanding and vision of environmental solutions related to the protection of the ozone layer. There was also a video presentation introducing the agreement, the competition and a display of the winners’ contributions, as well as others that highlighted academic and community initiatives contributing to environmental protection. Qatar is a member of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its amendments. In addition, Qatar has implemented several projects and activities to protect the ozone layer in co-operation with various sectors of the country and promoted environmentally friendly solutions and technologies. The MoECC is making significant efforts to promote sustainable development through various effective environmental initiatives and innovative solutions to protect the environment and natural resources in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
